The Canadian healthcare system comprises various modules, methods, and silos, which can lead to frustrations and gaps for patients, according to a life sciences expert. However, Ben Parry, a director at the Pangaea Group consultancy, emphasizes his belief that the system isn’t broken. During a recent episode of the NPC Podcast, he maintained there is a real opportunity to address the “handoff points” across the healthcare system, including pharmaceuticals, to better support patients.
Parry, speaking with his fellow Pangaea director Sylvie Pilon (pictured below), underlined the significance of overcoming silos in integrated health. He envisions a more integrated patient journey where all activities converge to support the patient effectively. He said the current reliance on outdated methods like phone calls and fax machines for patient procurement will evolve with the increasing adoption of technology. “As we get more technology in the mix, we’re going to be able to start to see different ways to share information,” he says.

Pilon noted that employee retention, engagement, and integration have become key internal issues in an evolving workplace model, particularly concerning environmental social governance concerns. She says that companies that demonstrate a solid commitment to environmental and social initiatives and a clear purpose are better positioned to attract and retain talent.
“Our new generation of employees are extremely savvy and have a high digital technical skill set that will help the industry evolve to the next level of digital interaction,” she said. “Work-life balance is important for this generation, but remote work has helped with that respect. I think it’s important that we don’t take that away from them if we want to retain our employees.”
Parry described the evolution of sales and customer-facing roles within the industry. He referred to the primary point of contact (POC) as a critical aspect of this evolution. He said some companies have virtual reps who help connect customers with other customer-facing roles. “This is an ongoing effort to try and minimize the multiple customer-facing roles.”

What bold predictions will you make about the life sciences industry during the coming 12 to 24 months?
I like to think that if we came together in two years and had this conversation again, we would see a set of healthcare systems across the country that are integrating information, making decisions and investments in healthcare, and believing that integrated health data systems are part of the infrastructure required for modern healthcare systems to be resilient and sustainable. I think how we work with data-driven healthcare systems will be critical. In Canada, we also have great artificial intelligence and machine learning developments. We have a global gold standard in this space, and it will take health data to evolve our healthcare systems. It will take our excellence in AI applied safely, ethically, and thoughtfully to our health data systems to pull the insights that we need to help us with more robust research. We’ll see better patient outcomes for our citizens. We’re going to see sustainable healthcare systems, and we’re going to see stronger research coming out of Canada, which means a stronger set of investments and a stronger economy.
