Ann Gomez, President and Founder of Clear Concept Inc. says she wants to help people create a “magical work culture.” She draws inspiration from her experience working for G.D. Searle, now part of Pfizer. “We had fun together, were well-connected, and did great work. That is the kind of workplace we all deserve to work in,” she said. Gomez and her team offer training programs for leaders and individuals to help them thrive at work.
Speaking on a recent episode of the NPC Podcast, Gomez [pictured below] noted that pressing challenges keep professionals in the workplace from being more productive. However, she says that in many cases, people make life and work more difficult than it needs to be. She says in today’s workplace, professionals face too many interruptions, too many priorities, and just too many complications.
She says it’s important to carve out focused time instead of trying to tend to everything at once. “Stop trying to boil the ocean. We are trying to do 19 priorities at one time. It’s just a recipe for diluting our impact and creating stress and frustration,” she said. “As leaders, we must be clear on our core priorities,” Gomez adds that identifying three core priorities can help achieve greater productivity.
Gomez says workers need to prioritize their wellness to achieve a balanced life. She said people show up more productive, collaborative, resilient, and open to feedback when prioritizing their well-being. “It is important for us as individuals to build routines around our well-being,” she said. Routines can include recognizing the times of the day when they are more energized, knowing when to sign off from work for dedicated personal time, and finding time to exercise.

What bold predictions will you make about the life sciences industry during the coming 12 to 24 months?
I would say at some level, we’re always thinking about that. I think there will inevitably be change, but I think a lot of the change we can’t control will be in the industry itself. Our ability to respond to that change will be pivotal and shape us for the future to come.
For example, many folks are questioning whether or not we’ll be face-to-face in promotional efforts and things like that. I believe that will always need to be the [case]. It has to be. People are people and we’ll always need a component of [face-to-face]. Having said that, I think technology will change how we continue to interact. I don’t think one replaces the other, but I think how we use those tools and how we apply them in an ever-changing environment is really going to be what’s instrumental for us to be successful.
Beyond that, I think there’s a bright future for things like AI, but at the end of the day, what we have to do is to continue to remind people why we do what we do and the purpose of what we do because that ultimately is going to carry the day.
